Red Sox To Evaluate Futures Of Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts

Oct 26, 2021 7:54 AM

The Boston Red Sox face many decisions and obstacles heading into the offseason, including the looming decision from J.D. Martinez on his player option and the pending free agency of Eduardo Rodriguez.

The club views Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers as "cornerstone players" but when asked if they saw both players sticking in their respective positions, Alex Cora did not commit.

Bogaerts and Devers form the left side of the infield at shortstop and third base, respectively.

"There's a lot of teams out there that, yeah, Raffy Devers 'struggles defensively' but on a daily basis, you want Raffy Devers. Same things with Xander Bogaerts. Same thing with [second baseman] Christian Arroyo," Cora said. "We'll address everything we talked about. I mean it's so early, it's too soon to start digging so deep into all this stuff, but I do believe the way we ended up playing and the things that we found out as a group defensively is going to make us better not only in the offseason, but also next year."

Devers is eligible for arbitration for the first time this offseason and the front office will prioritize contract-extension talks with the 25-year-old, according to sources.

The Red Sox also face a looming crossroads with Bogaerts, who can opt out of the final three years of his six-year, $120 million contract at the end of 2022.

Seager, 27, hit .290/.360/.516 (131 OPS+) with 50 home runs and 8.7 Wins Above Replacement over the last three seasons.

Kyle Schwarber 'All Ears' About Re-Signing With Red Sox

Oct 25, 2021 8:30 AM

Kyle Schwarber is expected to become a free agent this offseason after he declines a mutual option in his contract for 2022.

Schwarber was non-tendered by the Chicago Cubs last winter and then signed a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals with the option. He is open to re-signing with the Boston Red Sox after coming over in a trade.

"It'd be pretty stupid not to think about [returning]," Schwarber said. "My team here has been unbelievable. … If they feel like they would like to talk about [a new deal], I'd be all ears. I just think it would be stupid to 'X' someone off for no reason. Especially for a place like this, I'd be all ears."

Qualifying Offer Confirmed At $18.4M

Oct 20, 2021 8:29 AM

The Major League Baseball qualifying offer has dropped by $500,000 to $18.4 million.

The figure is determined by the average of the top 125 Major League contracts this year and marks only the second time that the price has fallen.

A qualifying offer can be made through the fifth day after the World Series, and a player has a week after that to accept.

If a team makes a qualifying offer to a player who signs a contract with another club before the amateur draft, his former club would receive a draft pick as compensation at the end of the first round or at the end of competitive balance round B.

Giants To Exercise Buster Posey's $22M Option

Oct 19, 2021 7:38 AM

The San Francisco Giants plan to exercise Buster Posey's $22 million club option for the 2022 season as long as the veteran wants to keep playing.

Posey's contract includes a $3 million buyout.

The 34-year-old helped lead the Giants to a franchise-record 107 wins and their first National League West title since 2012 this season.

"He is in our estimation the best catcher in baseball this year," Farhan Zaidi said. "Obviously want to have conversations with Buster and continue to have internal conversations about that, but having him on this team next year is a high priority."
